The Bauer-Furuta invariant may be regarded as a stable homotopy refinement of the Seiberg-Witten invariant which originates from gauge theory. A family version of the Seiberg-Witten invariant arises naturally in two contexts: when one considers a diffeomorphism of a 4-manifold or when one considers embedded surfaces in a 4-manifold. In this talk, I will try to describe construction of the Bauer-Furuta invariant in these settings. This is a joint work with Hokuto Konno.
