The "quantum fundamental group" of a 3-manifold is a refinement of the
fundamental group, defined using isotopy classes of bottom tangles
instead of homotopy classes of based loops. Using the quantum fundamental group, we
can construct the "quantum representation variety" associated to each co-ribbon
Hopf algebra (e.g. quantized SL(2)). I plan to discuss definitions and
properties of these 3-manifold invariants.
