In this talk I will review Arveson's theory of boundary representations for subalgebras of $C^*$-algebras and I will illustrate its use in the setting of tensor algebras over $C^*$-correspondences. I will show how it leads to intriguing problems at the interface of $C^*$-algebra theory and several complex variables.
