概要
Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) has been used in the continuous casting of steel since as early as the 1970s as a way to control solidification structures, thereby increasing yield and productivity. In tandem, mathematical modelling has played an important role in the implementation of EMS, as regards providing understanding of exactly what effect stirring has. In this talk, we consider some anomalies in the earlier work, which arise as a consequence of incorrectly-posed boundary conditions. After that, a combination of asymptotic and numerical techniques is used to provide accurate but rapid computation of the Lorentz stirring forces for this three-dimensional transient problem.
