Title: Caron's Wooden Mathematical Objects
Abstract:
From 1880 to 1915 Joseph Caron produced a series of mathematical objects to illustrate the geometry lessons on surfaces by Gaston Darboux at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. More than 150 models are still in the collection of the Poincaré Institute in Paris. We will show the mathematics involved in some selected examples.
The talk will be understandable by undergraduate students.
