Title:Numerical analysis of "discontinuous" differential equation and it application to seismic structure response evaluation

Abstract:
Solid continuum mechanics, which is described in terms of differential
equations, is well matured and has few unresolved problems. A difficult
unsolved problem is failure phenomena. On the mathematical viewpoint,
this problem is regarded as to solve "discontinuous" differential equations,
which are non-linear differential equations with discontinuously changing
coefficients; the solution of these equations is not continuous nor smooth.
In this seminar, a new discretization scheme which does not assume
continuity of function is introduced. Examples of numerical analysis of
solving discontinuous differential equations using this scheme are
presented; they are related to seismic response evaluation of buildings
and structures.
