Title：Practical situations of applying mathematics in a manufacturing setting  On optics and software programing    Abstract: Many problems occur during the long process, from the designing to the production. The development is completed only after problems are overcome one by one, where mathematics gives you powerful assistance as time and human resources are always restricted. However, it is not easy to apply mathematics to the development, as mathematics is not always very much familiar to engineers. I will talk about various issues as specifically as possible the engineers who did not major mathematics would taking optics and software development for example. In the first half, I will explain the usefulness of organized mathematical description for engineering and the difficulty of direct understanding the framework of the mathematics, taking mathematical structure of optics. In the latter half, I will show that software functions as interface between manufacturing and mathematics, then, talk about role of mathematics and its expectations there.   IMI Colloquium Report
