summary:
The lecture is concerned with photonic crystals, modeled by a
spectral problem for Maxwell's equations with periodic
permittivity. By Floquet-Bloch theory, the spectrum has band-gap
structure, but by purely analytical means it is extremely difficult
and tedious to decide if the spectrum really contains gaps. We
propose a computer-assisted method for proving (in the strict
sense) the presence of such spectral band gaps, using eigenvalue
enclosure techniques and a perturbation argument.
